Rowdy the Cowboy

When Rowdy was a young child his parents took him on a cattle drive through Texas and into Southwest Louisiana. When they stopped in Lake Charles, Rowdy immediately felt at home. Growing up Rowdy started to hang out on campus at McNeese to make friends. He decided to try out for some of the sports teams. Unfortunately, he was never good enough to make any of the teams. With no other option he decided to try out for the spirit team. Needless to say, Rowdy found his niche as the head cheerleader for McNeese, and the rest is history.

Vic the Demon

Big Red

Being a mascot for Lamar University is truly an honor. It gives “Big Red” the opportunity to represent both Lamar University and the Golden Triangle. He is not only at games cheering on our team and pumping up the crowd, but he is also very active throughout the community.

The life of a Lamar mascot is very exciting; it’s like magic, because once the suit is on, the audience treats you like a real character, knowing that they will be entertained. In conclusion, the best part of being a mascot is bringing a smile to someone’s face. It’s truly a joy and honor.

Izzy the Islander

Inspiration. Motivation. Bridging the gap.

Watching Izzy the Islander grow has been an amazing experience. Once on the list of college’s scariest mascots, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has worked tirelessly to create a character that is both loveable, fun, and distinctive. Taking part of that has been hard work, but absolutely worth it.

As a team, we work to inspire the youth of Corpus through events and games. We motivate our athletes to ultimately win – whether it is a sports game or the game of life. We bridge the gap – bringing the city of Corpus Christi together in a united front.

We’re all rooting for Izzy the Islander.

Bruce D. Bear

Proving that not all bears hibernate in the winter, I am ready to go at any time, rain or shine.

Football season is quickly approaching and this excites me very much. Nothing thickens my fur quite like some pigskin and I can’t wait to see my baby cubs (Bear Den student section) rooting for our team. When we are together clad in royal purple and silver we are one; we are a family.

One of my favorite football traditions is the weekly dance off between my beary self and a few of the brave students who dare challenge me. Of course, I have home field advantage so its not possible for me to lose!

Colonel Tillou

Whether it’s on the grassy turf of John L. Guidry Stadium or the hardwood court of Stopher Gym, you can find me anywhere the ever-growing chant of “Geaux Colonels!” can be found. I’m Colonel Tillou and I only bleed the Red and Gray of Nicholls State University. As the embodiment of our founder Francis Tillou Nicholls, I represent the strength and courage of the hard-working people of the bayou region. Our fans are loud and it’s my job to keep it that way. Don’t let this smile fool you, when you enter Colonel Country, the only good times rolling will be for the Nicholls Nation.

Sammy the Bearkat

By Stephanie Chronister

Coming from a rival school, I have experienced and learned friendly competition between Southland Conference schools; particularly mascots. Before I became Sammy the Bearkat, I was LadyJack for Steven F. Austin State University.

I spent one year as a live mascot, although I had an amazing time as LadyJack, I wanted to experience a different side to mascoting. Being a live mascot I did not get to experience being a true character like Sammy the Bearkat. Seeing mascots throughout society, you tend to see more characters than you do live mascots. Furthermore, I wanted more of a family aspect than just being a part of a team. When I came for my tryouts I saw just that. The team here was so close, and it shows through their national championships.

After tryouts and training in the suit I still had difficulty being Sammy the Bearkat. My entire life I have been nothing but a female mascot. Going from being a girly-girl to being a manly-man was a complete and total shock. My hips were built to sway, that’s just the way it is, or so I thought. The veteran mascots and alumni helped me learn exactly how to be Sammy. I noticed that even though Sammy is one person, each previous or current mascot put their own personality into him while they were in the suit. From watching them, I realized that I should not be ashamed to be myself.

Mascots are supposed to look silly. If they did not make people laugh, then they were not doing their job correctly. From that I was able to create my own character. Continuing on with the tradition, as captain I am now able to put some of my own personality into Sammy, and help the new mascots the same way I was helped. From one small town to another, I have certainly enjoyed mascoting at both schools and can’t wait to see what else is in store for myself at Sam Houston State University.

Roomie the Lion

Being part of the spirit program alone is an awesome opportunity, but being the mascot? Words cannot explain the excitement and enthusiasm of becoming Roomie the Lion. With huge muscles and a mane long enough for two, I proudly embrace the charisma and persona of Roomie. He is a proud and brave lion with a very playful side as well. He is the king of the jungle, the king of Southeastern, he is LION PROUD. Go green! Go gold! Go LIONS!

Eli the Golden Eagle

As Eli The Golden Eagle, I have the distinct pleasure of pumping up the Oral Roberts University crowd on game day.  Fans look to me for support of not just our basketball team, but all our athletes.  But on basketball game days, I need to be on my A-game.  Even though I cant talk, I do teach everyone how to Shout!  And when it’s time to get the crowd on it’s a feet, the ORU spirit sprint is my time to shine.

The Lumberjack

Getting the chance to be the Lumberjack here at SFA is a huge privilege. I get to support the Lumberjacks through athletics, as well as being the face of Lumberjack pride and spirit on campus and in the community. I take pride every time I put on my jeans, purple plaid shirt, suspenders, and pick up my axe and I become “The Lumberjack.”
